Our activities started back in November 12, 1994 when we were commissioned to rehabilitate, operate and maintain the Arequipa Matarani road over a total length of 105 kilometers for a period of 74 months. The commission included building and managing the Uchumayo and Matarani tolls roads. A total 39 workers were hired. This project was the first road concession ever awarded in Peru. In competing for the franchise, we were driven by our goal to diversify our corporation. We thus became Peru's first ever road concession operator. Despite our lack of previous experience in this type of activities, the professional capacity of our team of engineers coupled with the positive attitude of the technical experts we recruited earned the road users' recognition for our work. The initial contract term was extended to a total 13 years that concluded in 2007, when the franchise was awarded to another operator.
In January 2003, Grana y Montero, associated with JJC and Besco, organized Norvial Concession Company who won the road concession Ancon - Huacho - Pativilca, with an area of 182 kilometers. Concar is hired by Norvial as operating company and assume the maintenance and operation of toll, In addition to managing the toll stations, Norvial provides administration of a weighing station and provision of Mechanical Assistance with Medical Relief cranes and ambulances, as well as road patrol, which together with coverage through SOS poles and a Central Emergency Response, make the first emergency care system in the country's roads. . This new system allows us to monitor potential invasions of right of way, landslides that prevent users trafficability, accidents that occur on the road, and all events that affect the normal traffic of users, so that operable emergency resources in the shortest time possible. Our contract is for 15 years and are currently working in this project, providing employment opportunities to 130 employees.
Our new experience encouraged us to rise to new challenges. On April 12, 2006 we launched a bid to build the Paita – Tarapoto – Yurimaguas 955 kilometers road and part of the major South American regional infrastructure integration project or North IIRSA, its Spanish acronym. A contract was signed with the IIRSA Road Concession holder comprised of Odebrecht, Graña y Montero and Andrade Gutierrez construction companies. The project's activities created jobs and development for communities in the departments (states) of Piura, Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Martin and Loreto. The project's 470 workers efficiently provided regular and emergency road maintenance, toll and weighing operations, and car and emergency assistance to keep the road open and in good condition for traffic.
This project helped us acquire further experience in this industry, considering that the various customs, climates and geographies of the places where we worked, required a high degree of specialization and great effort of our part.
To pursue our growth pattern, and to contribute to the greater development and progress of communities across Peru, on December 7, 2007 we started working on the San Juan de Marcona – Nazca – Cuzco – Urcos road included in Segment 1 of the South IIRSA project, a 758 kilometers road. We signed a contract with Survial, a consortium combining JJC and Graña y Montero, to carry out a job similar to the above project. The road crosses the departments (states) of Ica, Ayacucho, Abancay and Cusco and has created about 250 jobs, mainly in neighboring communities, including professional and technical positions. This project features some peculiar characteristics because of the rough local geography and frequent landslides. However, in every instance we have met contract deadlines to solve emergencies while ensuring high safety standards.
